How it Works

Collagen is a fibrous protein which is found in our skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, and other connective tissues. There are several different types of collagen, but of these, there are two that are especially significant, as they control the majority of our skin’s mechanical properties. The first type, which is the most prevalent, is located in our tendons, bones, skin, and other tissues, particularly scars. The other type is found in quickly-growing tissue, such as that found in wounds in the early stages of repair, and is often replaced later on by the first type of collagen, which is stronger and tougher.

When we are children, our skin is rich with the second type of collagen, causing our skin to be soft and supple and enabling it to repair quickly upon injury. The growth of this type of collagen, however, slows with time. But as this type slows, the growth of the first type begins to increase, building up until around the age of thirty-five, when the skin reaches its peak of strength and health. Then after this point, the levels of the first type of collagen begin to decrease, and as time passes, this and all other types of collagen continue to diminish.

Through Micro-Needle Collagen Induction Therapy, the regeneration of these two types of collagen is stimulated. The skin is treated with a sterile single-use dermaroller, and to ensure minimal discomfort, a topical anaesthetic is applied. As the dermaroller is moved over the skin, the micro-needles penetrate the top layers of the skin and create pinpoint injuries in the deeper layers of the dermis. This triggers the body’s natural wound healing response. As a result, new collagen and elastin are formed to reduce wrinkle depth, increase skin elasticity and improve the appearance of scars and other skin flaws. During the final stage of the treatment, while the deeper layers of the skin are accessible, potent serums are rubbed into the skin, enhancing the serums’ degree of penetration and increasing their efficacy. With each treatment, new collagen builds, progressively filling in scars and wrinkles while at the same time improving the overall quality of the skin.

What Can Be Expected From Treatment?

Immediately following treatment, the skin will be a bit red, similar to what it might look like with a mild to moderate sunburn. This redness will diminish significantly within 24 hours, and there may be a little residual redness the following day, but by this time, the healing process will be complete. It is advised to avoid applying make up for 12 hours following treatment and to try to limit exposure to the sun for 48 hours.

Visible signs of improvement should occur within a week of treatment. The skin should look healthier and more vibrant. Collagen production will then continue for up to six weeks, and the process overall will carry on for months to come, providing a gradual and long lasting enhancement.

How many treatments will I need?

Although marked improvement will be observed after only one treatment, typically 70% improvement, it is advised for those who wish to make considerable improvement, or have severe problems to have between three and six treatments. The number of sessions needed will also depend on the nature of the problems that are being addressed.

To give the skin sufficient time to complete its regeneration process and to allow for maximum collagen production, additional treatments will be spaced four to 10 weeks apart depending on your individual condition.

Individual treatments cost up to $800, depending on the skill of the physician but on average cost $500 for face and neck areas and last approximately 90 minutes. During the procedure, a medical-grade Titanium Dermaroller (1.0mm-1.5mm) will be used to ensure optimum results. This is considered a medical procedure, and this grade of dermaroller can only be used by qualified medical professionals. The dermaroller itself is made by DermaRoller (US) and is of the highest quality, meeting medical specifications and requirements.
